Seven Seconds: What Happens When a Stranger Lands on Your Website

Somebody is going to land on your website today who has never heard of you.

They found you through a search, a map listing, an AI recommendation, or a link a friend sent them. They have a need. They have money. They are comparing you against two or three other options they pulled up in adjacent tabs.

You have about seven seconds.

Not seven seconds to sell them. Seven seconds to survive the cut. Here is exactly what runs through their head in that window, in order, and where most Birmingham business sites lose them.

Second One

Did It Even Load

Before anything else, the page has to appear.

If the visitor sees a white screen, a spinner, or content jumping around while images load in, a meaningful share of them are already gone. They did not evaluate your business. They never saw it.

This is the most brutal filter in the entire funnel because it happens before a single word is read, and the owner never finds out it happened.

Seconds Two and Three

Does This Look Like A Real Business

This judgment is instant, visual, and almost entirely unconscious.

The visitor is not reading. They are scanning shape, color, spacing, typography, and image quality. In under two seconds they have placed your business into one of three buckets.

A
Serious Operation

Clean layout. Real photography. Confident typography. Looks like a business that is doing well and knows what it is doing.

B
Fine, Probably

Generic template. Stock photos. Nothing wrong exactly, nothing memorable either. Survives the cut only if the competitors are worse.

C
Something Is Off

Dated design. Mismatched fonts. Low-resolution images. Reads as either very small, struggling, or no longer paying attention. Tab closes.

Here is what makes this brutal. The bucket has nothing to do with the quality of your work. A twenty year old business doing exceptional work lands in bucket C every single day because nobody updated the site since 2019.

Seconds Four and Five

Do They Do The Thing I Actually Need

Now the visitor reads, and they read exactly one thing. The headline.

They are looking for confirmation that you solve their specific problem. Not that you are passionate about excellence. Not that you have been family owned since 1987. Not a tagline about partnership.

They want to know, in plain words, whether you do the thing they came here for, in the place they live.

Sites that fail here fail by being clever. The headline is a slogan instead of a statement. The visitor cannot confirm the match in two seconds, so they go check the next tab where somebody wrote it plainly.

Clear beats clever every single time at the top of a page.

Second Six

Can I Trust These People

This is where the visitor looks for proof, and they look for it fast.

Reviews with real names. Photos of the actual team. Images of actual finished work. Credentials, certifications, years in business. Logos of clients or partners they recognize. Anything that signals other humans have already done business here and lived to tell about it.

A site with no proof reads as a site that has nothing to show. Even a great business with a page of honest reviews and real photos of its work will beat a better business that put none of that on the page.

Second Seven

What Am I Supposed To Do

The visitor has decided you are worth contacting. Now they need the path, immediately and obviously.

One action. Visible without scrolling. Repeated down the page. Call, book, request a quote, schedule the free consultation. Whatever the single next step is in your business.

Sites lose people here more often than owners expect. The visitor was convinced, could not find the button, decided it was not worth hunting for, and went back to the search results. That customer was yours and you never knew they existed.

The Pattern

None Of This Is About How Good You Are

Read back through the seven seconds. Load speed. Visual credibility. Headline clarity. Proof. A visible next step.

Not one of those is about the quality of your work, your experience, your pricing, or your service. Every one of them is about whether a stranger can figure out, very fast, that you are the right call.

Which means the competitor beating you is probably not beating you on the work. They are beating you in the seven seconds before anybody evaluates the work at all.

That gap is fixable, and it is almost always cheaper to close than owners assume.
