Why Your Business Does Not Show Up When Someone Asks ChatGPT for a Recommendation

Open ChatGPT right now and type this: best dentist in Trussville Alabama. Or best pressure washing company near Hoover. Or whatever your category is, in your market.

Read what comes back.

If your business is not in that answer, you just watched yourself lose a customer in real time. And it is happening dozens of times a week, silently, without a single line item on any report you look at.

What Changed

The Search Behavior Shifted And Most Owners Missed It

For twenty years, the local business playbook was simple. Rank on Google. Get in the map pack. Collect reviews. Customers search, they see you, they call.

That playbook still works, and you still need all of it. But a growing share of your customers have stopped searching entirely. They are asking instead.

They open ChatGPT, or Claude, or Gemini, or the AI summary sitting at the top of Google, and they ask a question in plain language. Who should I use for this. What is the best option near me. Which of these two is better.

And the AI gives them an answer. Usually a short list. Sometimes a single recommendation.

That answer is not a list of ads. It is not a ranked page of ten blue links the customer scrolls through. It is a direct recommendation, delivered with the authority of a trusted advisor, and the customer treats it accordingly.

If you are not in the answer, you are not in the consideration set at all. There is no page two.

The Mechanism

Why Some Businesses Get Cited And Others Do Not

AI tools do not invent recommendations. They pull from what exists on the open web, and they favor sources that are structured, clear, specific, and easy to parse.

This is where most local business websites fail completely, and the failure is almost always technical rather than creative.

01

No structured data. Schema markup is the code that tells a machine what your business is, where it is, what it does, what it costs, what hours it keeps, and how people rate it. Most local sites have none of it. Without it, an AI has to guess, and it usually guesses in favor of a competitor who did not make it guess.

02

No answer-shaped content. AI tools cite pages that directly answer the question being asked. If a customer asks what something costs in your area and your site has never addressed pricing in any form, you cannot be the source. If they ask which option is better for a specific situation and your site has never covered that comparison, you are not in the answer.

03

Everything lives on one page. A single homepage listing eight services cannot rank or get cited for eight different questions. Each service, each use case, and each real customer question needs its own page with its own depth. Most local sites have four pages total.

04

No geographic specificity. Serving the Birmingham metro is not the same as being findable in Trussville, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, and Alabaster. If the site never names the places, the machine cannot connect you to them.

What It Is Called

SEO Gets You Found. AEO Gets You Recommended.

The discipline that solves this has a name: answer engine optimization, or AEO. It sits alongside traditional SEO rather than replacing it.

SEO is about ranking. Getting your page to appear when someone searches a keyword. It still matters enormously and it is not going anywhere.

AEO is about being the source an AI pulls from when it composes an answer. Structured data so machines understand your business without guessing. Content written to directly answer the specific questions customers actually ask. Clear entity signals connecting your business to your services, your locations, and your credentials. Consistency across every place your business appears online.

Done together, they mean you show up whether the customer searches or asks. Done separately, or not at all, you are betting your pipeline on a search behavior that a meaningful share of your customers have already moved past.

The Practical Part

This Is A Website Problem, Not A Marketing Problem

Here is the part most owners find frustrating and clarifying at the same time.

You cannot fix this with more ad spend. You cannot fix it by posting more on social. You cannot fix it by asking for more reviews, though reviews help. Every one of those levers pulls on a different part of the machine.

Being citable by AI is a function of how your website is built. The structure. The schema. The depth of the content. The specificity of the language. The technical foundation underneath all of it.

Which means the fix is a website that was built with this in mind from the first line of code, rather than a website built on a template five years ago that someone is now trying to retrofit.

Every site we build includes local SEO, AEO, and full schema as part of the build. Not an upsell. Not a monthly add-on. Part of what a website is supposed to be in 2026, because a site that cannot be found and cannot be cited is not doing the job it was built for.

Your competitors are not better businesses. They are just easier for a machine to recommend.
